Rosette
met Marissa Garcia, a Louisville, Kentucky artist through an online
community whose purpose is to encourage global collaboration to "make
good things happen". Through emails, they began brainstorming
about starting the UWEC organization.
With
Rosette mobilizing some women to do crafts, and Marissa creating a
market for their products in the U. S., a trusting and respectful
collaboration began in April 2007.
With the goal of creating an organization were people are treated
fairly, respectfully, and in Rosette’s words “like family”, she met with
the first 8 women who were willing to work with her. In April of
2007, The Uganda Women Empowerment through Crafts was born.
By January 2008, UWEC employs and nurtures over 90 women artisans.
UWEC has applied an NGO registration in Uganda. |
